Being charged with a crime may lead to a lifetime of consequences. People with a criminal record may find it difficult to get or maintain a job, as well as receive loans for items such as a home or car. If you have been charged with a felony, it may be beneficial for you to seek an experienced criminal lawyer’s assistance. An attorney may be able to minimize or eliminate charges that have been brought against you, as well as minimize penalties—such as fines and jail time—if you are found guilty. Felonies are the most serious type of criminal offense a person may face. They are categorized by six classes, with a Class One being the most serious form of felony, and a Class Six felony being the least serious. Felony convictions may result in prison sentences in the Colorado Department of Corrections, which is the statewide prison system, and mandatory parole. Depending on the class of felony, a person may be sentenced anywhere from 12 months to the rest of their life in prison, and, in extreme cases, the prosecution may request the death penalty. If a person is convicted of a felony and is not sentenced to prison, they will almost always require supervised probation, and may be sentenced to a county jail. There are many different types of felonies, including general felonies, drug felonies, assault felonies, sexual felonies, and driving felonies. Criminal defense should be sought immediately after a charge or even once an individual becomes a suspect.
